The best breakfast burritos in Los Angeles, ranked once and for all.

Almost everybody else refused to rank them, so I took matters into my own hands.

BBAD, a modest Pasadena eatery devoted exclusively to crafting the perfect breakfast burrito, demands respect for its singular vision, offering just four burrito options and nothing more. I opted for the "Basic Bae-con" (wisely omitting sour cream, which I maintain has no rightful place in a breakfast burrito), and from the first bite, I was smitten. The undisputed star here is the potatoes pavé, thinly layered slices of potatoes, meticulously pressed, baked until tender, and then finished to a crisp, buttery perfection. These impossibly flaky potatoes elevate the burrito dramatically, complemented by ideal ratios of crispy bacon and fluffy scrambled eggs throughout. The burrito is satisfyingly hefty, guaranteed to leave you pleasantly stuffed. If there's one misstep, it's the chipotle aioli, generously included but somewhat overpowering the burrito's inherently delicious natural flavors. It would perhaps better serve as a side or used sparingly. The accompanying hot sauce and green salsa are excellent. Nevertheless, BBAD unquestionably lives up to its mission as the new breakfast burrito king in town.

Cofax's breakfast burrito remains a masterclass in morning comfort, evolving steadily over the years into near perfection. The current standout is their pastrami burrito, skillfully layered with savory pastrami, crispy tater tots, a perfectly fried egg, melted cheese, pickled jalapeños, and a bold deli mustard. Close behind, the classic bacon burrito continues to delight, showcasing smoky bacon, impeccably crisped tater tots, and velvety scrambled eggs. Bludso's hot link burrito, with its robust sausage and luscious fried egg, remains a strong third choice.

Sobuneh, a Santa Monica gem tucked within Colony Kitchen's bustling ghost-kitchen complex, gets its name from the Farsi word for breakfast. Specializing exclusively in breakfast burritos, Sobuneh was born from a backyard pop-up driven by owners on a mission to craft the ultimate breakfast burrito. Judging by their current rank at number two, they're remarkably close to achieving this goal. Among their offerings, "The Signature" burrito stands out impressively, wrapping fluffy scrambled eggs in an indulgent embrace of house-blend beef chorizo, velvety black bean spread, ripe avocado, and melted cheddar cheese. Crispy tater tots add texture, though their uneven distribution somewhat hinders the ideal bite. The natural flavors shine brilliantly, though the honey chipotle aioli, while tasty, suggests the burrito might better benefit from a zesty salsa or hot sauce for balance. "The BB," meanwhile, doesn't reach the same heights, notably due to its overly thick and chewy beef bacon, despite its enjoyable egg-forward approach. Although pricier, Sobuneh's burrito experience merits a splurge for special occasions or simply when craving something exceptional in the area.

Wake and Late still crafts one of the city's most compelling bacon breakfast burritos, a handheld symphony worthy of your morning attention. The brilliance lies in its harmony—crispy bacon that's neither overly brittle nor disappointingly limp, golden-crisp tater tots crackling gently beneath a creamy layer of perfectly scrambled eggs, and ripe avocado that lends just enough buttery freshness, all cocooned within a delicately toasted tortilla. Each bite sings in balanced proportions, every ingredient clearly articulated.

Cerveteca in Culver City serves a breakfast burrito that approaches the divine, a morning indulgence constructed with thoughtful precision and respect for the art of ratio. Here, eggs are not merely present—they flourish, generously portioned and prepared with care, enveloping each bite in silky, custard-like comfort. The subtle smear of bean spread beneath lends depth, harmonizing quietly rather than competing for attention.

Barran's 2239, known widely for its Michelin (bib gourmand) finesse, has unexpectedly yet joyously found breakfast-burrito enlightenment amid the constraints of the pandemic era. What they've achieved is nothing short of a mathematician's precision expressed in culinary form: precisely thirteen crisped-to-perfection tater tots, four ounces of meticulously cooked eggs, two ounces each of smoky bacon and melty cheese, all harmonized in an equation that proves deliciously reliable. Don't forget to check their Instagram for their Friday Specials (pre-order is highly encouraged as they typically sell out).

Great White, Venice's relaxed all-day cafe celebrated for fresh, local fare, immediately impresses with its breakfast burrito. The first bite introduces an exceptionally toasted, flaky tortilla enveloping immaculately fluffy, buttery scrambled eggs. Crispy bacon and the subtle freshness of chives and scallions further enhance each satisfying mouthful. While the tater tots, though tasty, fall short in crispness and the Oaxaca cheese adds little distinction, the accompanying salsa delivers a delightful, mildly spicy accent. The ratios are almost excellently balanced, though a touch more bacon would elevate it further. Overall, it's a remarkably pleasing morning indulgence.

At La Azteca Tortilleria, the flour tortilla isn't just a vehicle—it's the reason itself. Crafted meticulously by hand each morning in full, mesmerizing view, these tortillas possess an uncommon richness, a luxurious chew that is simply unmatched in the city. My ideal order: Chorizo, bolstered by cheese and potatoes, nestled warmly within this edible masterpiece. Yes, the 20 to 30-minute wait feels lengthy, but it's a small price for such profound handmade perfection.

The Rooster, once a humble food truck now rooted firmly in Pico-Robertson, delivers a breakfast burrito that sings with satisfying crispness, thoughtfully lined with a rich, comforting cheese. Yet, the choice of a fried egg—usually a crowd-pleaser—misses its mark here, where a gentle scramble might have better balanced the assertively crispy bacon and tots. Likewise, the salsa is merely adequate, lacking the spark to elevate an otherwise commendable offering.

Doubting Thomas in Echo Park serves up a breakfast burrito that feels elegantly ambitious yet comforting. The decision to incorporate gently fried eggs provides an indulgent counterpoint, while pork shoulder—expertly cooked to tender perfection—adds a depth and richness seldom encountered in morning fare. Ratios are impeccable, each bite thoughtfully composed, transforming the humble burrito into something uniquely refined and memorably luxurious.

At Jacks N Joe, a beloved USC breakfast institution, there's an off-menu legend quietly known as The 78, named affectionately after the jersey number of a USC football player who famously favored this hearty burrito. It's a breakfast creation of unapologetic ambition—eggs, hash browns, cheese, creamy avocado, bacon, sausage, and ham, all wrapped generously in a single, satisfying package. The promise here is immense, yet slight missteps temper what could have been transcendent: the hash browns congregate awkwardly at the bottom rather than blending throughout, and the salsa, a vital accent, remains frustratingly lackluster. Even so, it's undeniably compelling—a burrito with the heart of greatness that just narrowly misses full acclaim.

Lucky Boy, a Pasadena burger institution since 1961, generously lets your imagination run wild by offering to tuck nearly anything from their kitchen into a breakfast burrito. The sizeable burrito earns easy praise, boosted by abundant cheddar cheese and a favorable egg-to-sausage ratio. Hash browns over potatoes is a welcome choice, though they sadly lack crispness, and while the sausage does its job, it stops short of exceptional. Still, it's hearty, filling, and unapologetically comforting.

Nestled unexpectedly within DTLA's bustling Flower District, Poppy + Rose serves up a breakfast burrito defined by thoughtful ratios and culinary promise. Their house-smoked steak—thinly sliced rather than the chunkier texture one might prefer—offers a subtle disappointment, compounded by the absence of crispy hash and a much-needed salsa accompaniment. While the burrito, with eggs, cheese, brick hash, and intriguing sides of crème fraîche and BBQ sauce, carries undeniable ambition, it falls short of the restaurant's once-legendary short-rib breakfast burrito, a lamented classic still warmly remembered.

At Hash Restaurant in Playa Vista, the breakfast burrito is reliably enjoyable, with crispy tater tots doing admirable work alongside three fluffy scrambled eggs, dual cheeses (pepper jack and cheddar), and a pleasant touch of green onion. The red chili crema and house salsa are fine complements, yet despite these thoughtful details, nothing quite reaches the level of greatness. Solid, but stops shy of extraordinary.

Pico Pica Rico Co., a beloved Sherman Oaks eatery renowned locally for its authentic huaraches and approachable Mexican cuisine throughout breakfast, lunch, and dinner, offers a “Classic Breakfast Burrito” that’s reassuringly familiar. The menu confidently proclaims it as “ranked #2 by LA Eater,” a claim I couldn’t independently confirm. For its modest price, the burrito is comfortably solid—though overall somewhat bland and lacking distinction. Its tortilla slightly overwhelms the filling, and neither the hash browns nor bacon reach an ideal crispness. Still, it satisfies as straightforward morning comfort food, appropriately priced for casual breakfast indulgence.

Tacos Delta, a humble cornerstone in Silver Lake’s culinary landscape, offers a breakfast burrito defined by generosity and warmth. The chorizo remains a standout—vividly seasoned and gratifyingly abundant. However, the eggs are now notably scarce, appearing as mere fragments scattered sparsely throughout, reminiscent of egg-fried rice rather than a robust breakfast burrito. Whether due to the recent egg shortage or other reasons remains unclear. The potatoes, though comforting, could still benefit from added crispness. Despite these shortcomings, the outstanding hot sauce continues to unite the flavors, ensuring the burrito remains reliable on hungry mornings.

Burrito Bomba (originally in NoHo at the time of this review but now in Glendale) arrived with promise yet left disappointment in its wake. The steak and bacon burrito, ordered Bomba style with fried cheese, faltered on execution—the cheese lacked its crucial crispness, the bacon was disappointingly limp, and the potatoes flavorful but sadly devoid of crunch. The promised red tomato tortilla was inexplicably swapped for standard flour, stripping away another distinctive touch. Only the steak stood out positively, tender and flavorful amidst otherwise unfulfilled potential.

Larry's Chili Dog, a beloved Burbank fixture since 1953, draws locals with its nostalgic charm and comfort-driven menu. Priced attractively at $12, their breakfast burrito generously combines delightfully crispy bacon and sausage, promising hearty satisfaction. Unfortunately, the mushy hash browns and overcooked, flattened eggs detract significantly from the experience, leaving the burrito disappointingly bland overall. A notable redemption comes via the spicy, presumably habanero salsa, brightening the flavors considerably. Despite its shortcomings, the burrito's highlights—the bacon, salsa, and price—offer some solace to hungry regulars.

Cafe Los Feliz, a cozy neighborhood staple renowned for pastries and traditional breakfast fare, came highly recommended by locals for its breakfast burrito. Unfortunately, it arrived as an underwhelming, soggy disappointment. Undercooked bacon and mushy, textureless roasted potatoes dominated the experience, obscuring any presence of scrambled eggs to the point of near-invisibility. Its only redeeming quality was a fresh, notably spicy habanero salsa—bright and flavorful enough to momentarily distract from the potato-heavy letdown.

Groundwork Coffee Co, a ubiquitous LA caffeine staple, offers a breakfast burrito with commendable eggs and a vibrant, fiery salsa that nearly salvages the dish. Unfortunately, softness plagues both potatoes and bacon, neither achieving necessary crispness, while misplaced bell peppers—seemingly never suited for breakfast burritos—introduce an unwelcome texture.
